Summer isn’t over yet – hopefully! I’m absolutely not writing off the last bit of August just because September is looming. I’m still holding out for a lovely little Indian summer and squeezing every last bit out of it.
So this is not one of those “summer’s over, September starts Monday, sort yourself out” 😂 articles.
September always seems to bring this pressure to RESET EVERYTHING. New routine, new diet, new training plan, new healthy version of ourselves who meal preps every Sunday, drinks 3 litres of water and never misses a workout.
Except you don’t actually need a September fitness reset.
And I certainly won’t be having one in September because I turn 50 on September 2nd! 🥳 So naturally, I’m taking the whole month to celebrate.
There’s glamping in Barmouth, New York, and then the small matter of setting up a brand new studio. That means taking approximately a million deliveries, building furniture, setting up a ridiculous number of systems and, of course, plenty of very important coffee meetings with potential instructors.
I suspect there may also be cake. And wine.
So my September probably isn’t going to be the poster child for perfectly structured health and fitness. 😂
Fitness has to fit around real life
But that’s kind of the point.
Fitness has to fit around real life — birthdays, holidays, busy weeks, meals out, celebrations, work and all the other stuff we actually want to do.
It doesn’t have to be all or nothing.
I’ll still move. I’ll train when I can. I’ll walk. I’ll eat some nutritious stuff amongst the birthday food. And I’ll probably carry a LOT of boxes — which I’m absolutely counting as functional training.
A few weeks where your usual routine looks different doesn’t mean you’ve lost everything you’ve worked for. You don’t need to punish yourself for enjoying a holiday, compensate for meals out or suddenly train every day because September has appeared on the calendar.
You can simply pick things back up as life settles down again.
Maybe I’ll reset in October…
Then, if everything goes how it’s meant to, maybe my reset can happen in October.
Although even better than a reset, there might just be a rather lovely brand new studio to train in. 👀💚
And perhaps that’s a better way of looking at September anyway. Not as a deadline to suddenly sort ourselves out, but as another month of life.
Keep moving. Train when you can. Eat reasonably well most of the time. Enjoy the birthdays, holidays, sunny evenings, cake and wine when they happen.
And if we get that Indian summer I’m hoping for?
Make the most of that too.
No September fitness reset required. Just carry on.
