The other day in pole class, we were chatting about age and how, with the right mindset and habits, we can continue doing incredible things throughout our lives.
It reminded me of my Nan.
At 64, when many people were being told to slow down, she learned how to ski.
Not watch skiing. Not admire it from a cosy café with a hot chocolate. She actually learned to ski.
She went on to spend her later years travelling, staying active, embracing new experiences, remarrying at 70, and living a full, adventurous life until the age of 100.
It got me thinking about how much of ageing we’ve accepted as inevitable.
Yes, our bodies change as we get older. But what if we’ve underestimated how much influence we actually have over how we age?
It’s Time to Re-Purpose Our Goals
Many of us focus our health and fitness goals on losing weight, fitting back into old jeans, or simply surviving menopause without losing our minds.
But what if the bigger goal is creating a body that can take you places?
A body that can:
- Walk for miles through a city you’ve never visited
- Carry a backpack through an airport without needing a recovery day
- Hike to breathtaking viewpoints
- Learn to ski at 64
- Swim in the sea on holiday
- Dance all night at weddings
- Chase grandchildren around the park
- Climb stairs with confidence and ease
- Say yes to opportunities without wondering if it’s going to be too much effort
That’s a very different goal from simply becoming smaller.
Train for Life, Not Just for Looks
Strong women age differently because they train for life.
Every strength session, every walk, every protein-rich meal is an investment in your future self.
Not just the version of you next month.
The version of you at 60, 70, 80 and beyond.
When people reach their later years, they rarely wish they’d spent more time trying to make themselves smaller.
What they do wish for is:
- Energy
- Freedom
- Mobility
- Independence
- Confidence in their body
The ability to book the holiday.
Climb the hill.
Join the activity.
Make the memory.
These are the things that truly matter.
Strength Is About Creating Options
When you build strength now, you’re giving yourself more choices later.
You’re creating a body that supports the life you want to live.
A body that allows you to remain active, capable and independent for as long as possible.
You’re not exercising as punishment for what you ate.
You’re training for adventures that haven’t happened yet.
And that’s a far more exciting reason to get strong.
