Less cardio, more results – why your old approach isn’t working

If you’ve ever tried the “eat less, move more” approach and ended up exhausted, starving, and frustrated, it’s not your fault. During perimenopause and menopause, that method often backfires.

Here’s why:

  • Extreme cardio + low calories = muscle loss → slower metabolism.
Your body burns calories through muscle mass, not endless treadmill sessions. Losing muscle makes fat loss harder long-term.
  • Poor sleep + high stress = more cravings + fat storage.
Lack of sleep increases ghrelin (the hunger hormone) and lowers leptin (the fullness hormone), while stress elevates cortisol, pushing your body toward belly fat storage.
  • Skipping protein = less satiety, more overeating later.
Protein doesn’t just build muscle, it regulates blood sugar, curbs cravings, and preserves lean tissue during fat loss.

Sustainable fat loss strategies that work:

  • Prioritize protein at every meal (eggs, Greek yogurt, chicken, beans, fish, tofu). Protein also has a higher “thermic effect,” meaning your body burns more calories digesting it than carbs or fat.
  • Lift weights 2–3x a week. Strength training signals your body to hold onto muscle while losing fat, helping you feel leaner, stronger, and more energetic.
  • Sleep is non-negotiable. Deep, restorative sleep helps regulate appetite hormones and keeps cravings in check.
  • Stress management matters. Breathwork, walking, or even 10 minutes of quiet time can lower cortisol and improve fat loss results.

Myth vs Truth

Myth: “More cardio = more fat loss.”
Truth: Cardio burns calories in the moment, but strength training builds muscle that keeps your metabolism elevated 24/7.

Myth: “Eating less is the fastest way to lose weight.”
Truth: Chronically undereating slows metabolism, increases cravings, and causes muscle loss. Nourishing your body properly is the long-term fat loss solution.

Myth: “Protein is only for bodybuilders.”
Truth: Protein is essential for every woman, especially in midlife, to maintain muscle, balance hormones, and control hunger.

Quick Win:

This week, aim for 30g of protein at breakfast. Try:

  • 2 eggs + a side of Greek yogurt
  • Protein smoothie with fruit + nut butter
  • Overnight oats with protein powder and chia seeds

Starting your day with protein balances blood sugar, reduces cravings, and fuels fat loss, without the crash.
